Among the many different types of labels, one is the thermal label. This type of label has several functions – like being used as tags, passes, in distribution centers, on the wristbands of patients, in small equipments, on shipping material, for packaging labeling etc. But the biggest and most common use is undoubtedly for making barcodes.
Barcodes are used for identification and tagging purposes. There are electronic scanners which will pick up the exact dimensions like the length and breadth of the bars. These bars can be one dimensional as well as two dimensional. These bars have to be printed using precision technology – otherwise the reading will become false. One must have seen barcodes being regularly printed on different items in shopping malls. The barcodes on these items are then scanned and the programmed data will come up in connection with a particular barcode. These barcodes are all created using thermal label technology. That is because the high quality of print with rich and well defined edges, prominent graphics and text of the labels of thermal technology is well suited for creating barcodes.
There are two types of thermal labels. One is the direct thermal label or the DT type label, while the other is the Thermal transfer or TT type label. The first is very commonly used for those applications where there will not be much exposure to heat, light, abrasion or chemicals. That is because, the material that is used for making DT type labels is chemically treated and is heat sensitive. These labels, therefore, cannot withstand heat and the other environmental conditions mentioned. They also turn black in color once they are passed under the heating print head. They are mainly suitable for short term applications, like for six months in some shipping product labeling. They also find use in the wristbands to tag patients. For this purpose, they are often given coatings that make them more chemically resistant. Other uses of direct thermal labels are in a distribution center, shipping, compliance, citation, event and parking tickets, coupons, etc. They are also used as tags and in passes for visitors in some events.
The other type of thermal technology is the thermal transfer technology. Although this type of label too can be used for making barcodes, the label making procedure is very different. The thermal label printer for the TT type labels uses a ribbon. In DT labels, the heating element, itself in the shape of the words or images to be printed, directly prints on the printing material which can be polymer, paper etc. In case of TT labels, a ribbon is used in the printing machines. The ribbon melts the ink onto the material for printing and this way the printing is done. Unlike the DT labels, the material used in TT labels is not sensitive to heat. That is why such labels can find applications in laboratories, freezers, highly durable wristbands and barcodes, asset tags etc. They are ideal for making any identification labeling that will remain permanently as they are not even sensitive to chemicals or light.

With the advent of the technology and the world over economic developments, there is a good amount of trade not only locally but also internationally calling for many things to be incorporated into every aspect of business life. Whether it is about local production and distribution of the goods or the international import and export, there is a need to label the goods in a way to distinguish the features represented by it including the price and the ingredients. The labeling of the products and other things is quite necessary now and the world is moving around to getting everything to be identified right from the first look whether it is some card or the labeling.
The need and trend to label the products has multiplied the use of thermal labels in the industry as well as the services sector and there is a widespread use that is being carried out for the same. Let us take a look at where these are being used and how these are being used but one thing that goes with them is the basic business use because these are not being used for the home purposes.
When there is need to track the inventory, it is the time to go for creating the bar codes. These bar codes are easily created with the help of the thermal direct or indirect labels. In most of the organizations, these bar code labels are being effectively used in connection with the efficient POS systems. After the bar code labels are printed, these are affixed to the bottles, packages, containers, etc., to identify the same with the help of the bar code readers. The employees do not have to face any difficulties with the pricing.
These labels are also able to be put to use by the resorts where the resorts have different equipments at different locations. These locations can easily be found with the labeling and the inventory therein.
There is a good use of these thermal labels in both the hospitals and the hotels. In the hotels, the management can use these labels in connection with the baggage identification, assets marking, inventory tracking, etc. The restaurants can also use this facility in order to issue the counter coupons and the take-outs. The thermal labeling is quite efficient to be used in the environments that deal with the fast delivery of the work and the customer care at the counter.
This type of labels are also being used in the markets and the grocery stores where the owners have to maintain the inventory stock as well as the packages and the containers are also affixed the relevant bar code labels so that there is no issue as to the pricing of the products.
These can also be used for the home if you are intended to manage the home and the essential items at home in a neat and good manner. For example, you can use these labels on the kitchen items. The greeting cards and the names on it are very easy to be managed in a way that you come up with everyone in the list.
There are many other uses where these labels are playing their roles. You have the option to create the labels for the purpose that you think to be of great value to you.

We human beings are always trying to label things. This is because our memories are limited and it helps us to keep track of things by grouping similar things together. That is, after all, the main purpose of the different kinds of thermal labels that we use in daily life. These labels can help us to identify and mark similar things in a similar way so that the people do not have any problem in recognizing the similarity. For example, in the clothing industry it is very common to sew some labels that will give the size of a particular dress. The buyer of a shirt will immediately understand if the shirt is of XL size or something else. This he can do by simply quickly studying the label that goes with the shirt – he wouldn’t have to take out a measuring tape to check out its dimensions!
Not just for clothes, labels are used elsewhere. From the textile industry to fruits to electronic gadgets to accessories to sports equipment, every kind of product almost will have some label on it to declare its type, size, dimensions, specifications etc. And there are also many types of labels. The thermal labels are just one type of label. There are other kinds of labels, but in all, there are mainly two categories of labels – adhesive types and stock types.
The thermal labels in particular are made in a thermal specific manner. There are two types of thermal labels as well – the direct thermal label and the thermal transfer label. Thermal labels are stock type labels. That means that they usually have adhesives on one side and some printing on the other side. In case of direct thermal stock type labels or DT labels, the printing is done with the help of heat. Some heating element usually can imprint an image on the labels.
This heating element can have the shape of some letters or words or images. One very peculiar thing about the DT labels is that their color changes when they are exposed to heat. Usually, the color changes to black, rendering the label unreadable. So that is a genuine drawback of this kind of label. So there is an irony – even though it itself was made through the usage of heat, it can fade out or become illegible or obscure to make it difficult to read, if it comes in contact with some other heat source. It can also become completely unreadable. That said, it also has its advantage – a custom label can be created in situ or at the work location itself.
For those applications which tend to be in close proximity to other kinds of heat sources, the thermal transfer type of thermal label is generally used. The main advantage of the thermal transfer or TT label is that it is much more durable and is much less likely to fade or become obscure when in contact with another heat source. Special label printers for thermal transfer labels are generally used to create this sort of labels.

While talking about the labels, we come up with 2 main different types of them as to their working and the way they do. The first one is the Direct Labels and the second type is called the Transfer Labels. Although they both are used for printing the labels but they work a bit differently. Both of the types are ready to deliver the products that are ultimately fulfilling your labeling needs. The way they do the job or how they come to be produced is being entailed here:
First of all it is about the Direct Thermal Labels and as the name suggests, a direct contact or impact is used to print the images and the characters on the labels and this contact is between the printing paper and the head of the printer. It actually gets good as the material of the labels is designed in a way that it comes out to be very sensitive to the heat. The way how the print head works involves the heating of the printer head in a way and to that extent which ultimately heats the images to the burning at the labels.
When the heated head of the printer comes into the contact with the paper, the result is the darkening of the area that is burned thus producing the images and the characters on the labels. These images and the characters are very easy to be seen and the result is quite amazing. The popping out or the appearance of the images and the characters on the labels is the result of a chemical reaction that is carried out between the heated print head and the label material designed to react against the heated print head. You must have felt that there is a feeling and touch of warmth as you go for touching the labels right after the production.
After the first type, let us get to the next type which is called the Transfer Thermal Labels which are often to be used and there is a widespread use of the same. The ways the images and the characters on these labels are produced are very simple. In this case, there is a ribbon that is used to pass over the material of the labels thus introducing the impact on the labels. After that there is the next step in which they both have a contact with the printer head while passing through the plate. This plate is made of metal. When the printer head is heated to a desired level, it comes into contact with the ribbon. The material of the ribbon is designed in a way that it transfers to the label when heated to a level which results in the imposing of the images and the characters on the labels.
The information provided on both types of the labeling is expected to deliver you a qualitative and comprehensive understanding of the whole of the process behind the scene. For the purpose of detailed information about the types of the printer heads, the quality of the ribbons used, the temperature required and the quality of the printed label and the material, there are many things to be discussed and brought to knowledge well before a customer goes for buying the same.
