Pros and Cons of Outdoor Advertising
In whatever kind of business one is engaged, careful consideration to the means to reach the target market is paramount. General consideration of the effectiveness and cost of the advertising method is also important in the choice of a particular advertising method. Any promotional display done outdoors to create awareness of products and services is referred to as outdoor advertising. There are different ways through which this can be achieved to create awareness of a product or service. Every means of advertising has its own pros and cons.
To start with, roadside billboards are commonly used across the world to reach millions of motorists and pedestrians. A brightly colored billboard with big and bold wording tends to stand out amidst several others around it. The combination of color and size of words captures the attention of the audience and are able to get the intended message. Also the repetitive effects associated with billboards assist in creating a lasting impression of the advert. A strategically placed billboard can be a cost effective way of reaching a large market considering the numerous road users on busy highways.
While an outstanding billboard serves its purposes, a dull colored or wrongly worded one can be a total failure and wastage of resources. This is because it is easily forgotten within a split of seconds due to its failure to communicate effectively to the audience. Therefore the creativity of the designer is critical in ensuring that billboards communicate effectively, the intended message using the least expressions or words possible and create a lasting impression in the memory of a passenger in a passing vehicle. Thus it would be inappropriate to convey specific information like direction and telephone contacts on this medium of advertising.
The developments in technology have also contributed to the growth of this industry. Outdoor advertising has never been better than with invention of electronic billboards. They are mostly placed on major hotels as LCD screens showing either full motion videos or texts. This is a good development on the use of billboards since the information displayed keeps on changing and thus isn’t boring unlike non-moving billboards.
Due to their captivating nature, they can be distractive to road users when placed on the roadside and this can lead to road accidents. Are also costly for individual businesses compared to standard billboards but this is eased by the fact that different businesses can use the same billboard and cost-share the expense.
Posters placed at different locations make part of outdoor advertising. They are cheap, require little space and highly-imp active. They are suitable for local business adverts and are best located near the business advertised. This is disadvantageous in itself since they cover a small region and cannot be used by international businesses.
